Thinking of fitting a TDi into my 13 window deluxe but getting a bit of mixed feelings from my pals -saying it'll spoil a nice splity  looking at installing a TDi engine with a gear ratio working out close to 4.46 : 1 x 0.70 = 3.122 this will give nice low RPM's at motorway speeds and really good MPG figures ( above 40 ) ,

I'm in two minds whether to buy another split ( or bay ) to do this conversion on , or just say sod it to what they think :) the engine install will be reversible as I'll be trying not to cut it about :) will be a working advert to various conversions Engine / box

I know a lot will have different views on this subject

Well I think it would be easier on a split then a bug. I had the idea of doig that a good few years ago now and it never got done. There was too much involved and with a bug theres not much room to hide the engine nevermind the cooling stuff and that was with a 3 pot vag tdi.

I've always said if it's your vehicle do what you want and to hell what people think.

I don't see any difference in fitting a porsche engine or scooby so I say go for it. It will be interesting to see how it works Phil 8)

As Wayne said, no difference to fitting a big petrol engine which seems to be considered to be very acceptable.

In fact the diesel conversion is a better idea as itll make the vehicle even more practical to use daily.

Personally if its a really good original one Id be tempted to keep it a reversible change as you said, but its yours at the end of the day.

Go for it.

as above for me

unless its a untouched barn find one owner split get it done, no doubt it will of had work over the years so even if you did have to drill a few holes or cut a little here and there its nowt that couldnt be put back, and at the end of it you will have a split that does decent miles to gallon, cruises at a decent speed and will go anywhere on a long run with out needing to worry about it spitting its aircooled dummy out

if you can fit it and chip it, do a run at santa pod and be the first 18 second diesel BWA

that would be a good advert for your work :D

:DNo ECU = far cheaper and more tunable with the MTDi pumps that I'm building :D I've run 18 secs with one of my old standard Peugeot engine caravells so think the splity with 5 speed Audi A4 ( passat type box ) will do a good run at a lower figure :D

Nic that would be a good idea going by the value of this one but at the end of the day I've had it so long and if I tried to find one for the same money I'd only end up buying a piece of paper and a bag of rust :) Just waiting to hear from Uncle as he's back over S.A :)
